Holes is a child’s book written for kids as adults. I suppose that’s always the secret to good children’s literature, but here it really applies because you get a story that is as engrossing as they come. The best part though is that at no time did I have to refer back to anything to figure out what was going on.

Holes is the story of young Stanley Yelnats, a boy born into a family cursed with bad luck. Stanley is the fourth Stanley in his family and his ancestors share his misfortune. His Great great-Grandfather started the curse when he failed to fulfill a promise to a gypsy fortune teller named Madame Zeroni (Eartha Kitt) and now his family is paying the price. His father Stanley the third (Henry Winkler) spends his days trying to make shoes smell better.

Which makes it ironic when Stanley gets arrested for stealing a pair of famous tennis shoes that fall into his lap. He then gets sentenced to Camp Green Lake for 18 months, and that camp is anything but a fun summer place. (more...)

They live, and They are here to kick ass and chew bubble gum. (And They are fresh out of bubble-gum.) No clue what I’m talking about? Well, let me tell you, I’m talking about one of the greatest “guilty pleasure” guy movies ever made, namely John Carpenter’s They Live. Now as if gun fights, aliens, beautiful women and government plots weren’t enough to make a man salivate over this flick, check out the star. That’s right, it’s Rowdy Roddy Piper, the toughest SOB ever to where a skirt. (Or a kilt if I’m saying it to his face.)

In what is arguably his best role (which isn’t saying much, but we love him), Roddy plays an out of work construction worker who is one of the many people to recently become homeless in a near future recession. While living in a shanty park, he notices strange goings on at the church across the street. Upon further investigation he fins out the church is a front for what appears to be an illegal operation. But when he looks in the boxes the fake church is packing all he finds are sunglasses. Sunglasses? That’s when all heck breaks loose. (more ...)
