• It is more a subtle story of the fact that in Indian household how most decisions are taken by the man, how no attention is paid to the desires of the lady, for example how even when the husband and wife sleep together it would be a test for the husband whether he can control his desires, not to give the woman pleasure.
• And in such a type of scenario, women invariably have two choices, either to accept all this and take it into their own life, which is usually the case or not accept this and try to mould things to satisfy themselves, which makes a movie!
• Fire is a brilliantly directed story of the second option, which women choose for themselves, no sacrifice, not to serve anybody else, rather a decision for their own good. Somehow the whole idea of justifying lesbianism didn't find an acceptance in the Indian audience but if one looks the whole movie from an angle of self-expression, then the whole debate doesn't even arise.

This threat, along with a few others, was received after the first screening of Fire at the International Film Festival of India in Trivandrum this past January," she remembers.

• STORY : Sita (Nandita Das) is a rebellious, unique and sensuous young woman who, having recently been sold into an arranged marriage, faces life with her preoccupied Indian husband.
• For Director Deepa Mehta, Fire sees a departure from the usual idiosyncratic Asian wife who exists only a level of servitude.
• Beautiful, adventurous and exotic beyond her years it is obvious - in the early scenes of Fire - that Sita will not tolerate the lot of screen heroines before her.
• Her husband Jatin (Jaaved Jaaferi) is an egotistical man who is more concerned with kowtowing to his Chinese mistress and escaping into the realms of Western pop music than paying close attention to his new spouse.
• This is not the case however for Radha (Shabana Azmi), the long-suffering wife of Jatin's brother Ashok. Radha, the wife (or domestic slave whichever way you want to look at it) has been at the beck and call of her husband Ashok, who in his advancing years, has found great comfort in the company of a spiritual leader who peddles the manifesto that any thoughts of desire are sinful and impure.
• Thus she remains barren and devoid of any affection.
• The cramped household also comprises Jatin's invalided grandmother and the crafty Mundu (Ranjit Chowdhry), a voyeur and man who thinks nothing of popping on an X-rated video in front of the grandmother and masturbating.
• Mundu is the eyes and ears of the New Delhi household that makes its living hiring videos. The advent of time sees subtle changes taking place in the house and in the emotions of the two women. A clash of modern and traditional ideals leads the women away from the heartache and inadequacies of their husbands and into each others arms. From snatched erotic moments blossoms the dawn of love and rebellion which change the family forever.
• Atmospheric, tumultuous and sumptuous in its visual delivery, Fire, the first of a trilogy (Earth is currently being written, with Water to follow) whips you up into its volatile arms and takes you to the chasm where taboo and desire entwine.
• Slowly it builds to pressure-cooker proportions and ignites fury from certain quarters of the lair. Shabana Azmi - who portrays the tormented and hypnotic Radha - fills the screen with her dusky beauty and her longings.
• She steals not only your heart but each scene she commands. Nandita Das as Sita is refreshing and revels in the revolutionary stance of a woman perched upon the wings of change. Also worthy of comment is the sly Mundi performed by Ranjit Chowdhry who juggles humour, sleaze and voyeurism admirably.
• One of the greatest pleasures of immersing yourself in the caverns of Deepa Mehta's work is that it is a shared experience. Viewing Fire at the recent Melbourne International Film Festival, in a cinema that seemed to be splitting at the seams with expectant viewers, was a liberating experience. It was impossible to escape the sighs, expectations and gasps emanating from fellow movie goers. When the final credits slid down the screen the entire theatre erupted into deafening applause and whistles. This is the kind of effect Mehta has, and to be a witness is to realise that she is one of the most important film makers of Indian and contemporary history.

• STORY FIRE :
• A young woman, in an arranged marriage, throws the traditions of an extended Indian family into confusion and develops a passion for her sister-in-law.
• REVIEW FIRE :
• A country's first feature film about a homosexual couple, and it is about women, not men (after a 35-minute documentary Khush about Indian lesbians and some gay men, and the 11-minute video production BOMgAY).
• This is because Fire deals more with women's roles in mainly Indian society, rather than with any lesbian subculture.
• The same old story of a lesbian film, which is disputed as being such by the film makers? Certainly director Deepa Mehta and star of the film Shabana Azmi are opposed to this categorisation.
• Fire advocates tolerance etc., the usual stuff, and so is to be understood in a "humanistic" sense. When considering the potential audience, film makers are often more conservative than their product, as Philadelphia, which tried to distance itself from the North American gay scene, demonstrated.
• In this light it is understandable and forgivable for Nandita Das as Sita, in comparison to Shabana Azmi as Radha, not to come across totally convincingly as a lesbian, if she is not supposed to be one.
• In its social critique, Fire is laden with symbols, although this is a society steeped in symbols. Also the dreamy satire on the gender roles in an old fairy-tale is good for a few laughs. Apart from that, the socio-critical film fulfils all the expectations of its (western) audiences, except that it was filmed in English, or rather "Hinglish". Not, we are assured by the director who emigrated to Canada in 1973, for any commercial reasons, but because her mother tongue, like that of millions of other middle-class children, happens to be English as a result of British colonialism. A butch-femme dance scene with Sita and Radha shines in innovative radiance, as the women not only slip into the relevant roles, but into the relevant Chinese roles.
• An encouraging women's film from a society which suppresses more than the West knows from experience.

• The beauty of this movie is more in the questions it asks than the erotic relationship between two women who resort to a lesbian relationship due to their husbands finding satisfaction everywhere else besides their marriage bed.
• Are all sins equal? Is adultery not seen in the same light by religious people as desiring a person of the same sex? Why are people who desire love in the way these two women do seen as more sinful than those in society who commit adultery? Does God turn his eyes and not see one and see the other?
• This movie asks questions that are difficult to answer because all of us possess desire. We all want to be loved, understood and feel the compassion of others.
• We don't want to live our lives feeling lonely, unloved, rejected sexually. Radha (Shabana Azmi) and Sita (Nandita Das) are forced to choose between a loveless life with their husbands or a caring and compassionate life with one another.

• When Deepa Mehta's FIRE was released in 1998 based on the theme of lesbianism, it had generated countrywide protests. And it happens again.
• A cinema hall that screened this week’s Karan Razdan’s release GIRLFRIEND was set ablaze by the Kranti Shiv Sena group set the Sajjan movie hall in Sigra, Varanasi and the Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena wing of Shiv Sena created similar chaos outside Premiere theatre in Dadar, Mumbai.
• The protestors are demanding a ban on the film, objecting to its theme of alternate sexuality. But some distributors think that the censor board has cleared the movie and so no one should have problems with the content.
• Censor board chief and actor Anupam Kher told a TV news channel from Mumbai that it is their duty to only to give certificates to films and cut objectionable portions however he agrees that it is the duty of police to stop the screening if they felt it would lead to social tension.
• The Rashtriya Sawayesewak Sangh supreme Mr. K. Sudershan severely reprimanded the film critic who glorified GIRLFRIEND for commercial gains. He also quoted some parts of the review to substantiate his attack. He accused the film of being an insult to the Indian culture and values we represent.

Perry says, "I didn't cry, but I felt like I was about to for like seven years. There was a sweet moment where my girlfriend and I went for a walk on the stage. • Agnès aime Elin. Seulement voilà, Elin n'est attirée que par les garçons, comme c'est d'usage à Åmål, petite ville suédoise aux préjugés tenaces et à l'ennui mortel, qui ne laisse pas beaucoup de choix à ses adolescents : aller en cours, puis traîner de soirée en soirée…
• Comment le réalisateur Lukas Moodysson a-t-il pu obtenir une telle fraîcheur et un tel naturel de la part de ses jeunes acteurs, étonnants et attachants, dans cette belle histoire d'amours adolescentes, loin des clichés du genre ?
• Car plus qu'un énième film de coming-out et de découverte de soi, Fucking Åmål est avant tout un film sur la cruauté et la solitude de l'adolescence et sur les relations familiales ; un film qui, pour la première fois, aime les adolescents sans les utiliser.
• L'émotion est renforcée par le jeu des acteurs, Rebecca Liljeberg et Alexandra Dahlström en tête, et cette touchante histoire d'amour ne devrait pas vous laisser indifférent.

• Excelente, Una comedia dramatica imperdible.
• Simplemente Excelente. Una pelicula que encuentra a Rebecca Liljeberg en su máxima expresión, interpretando a una adolescente enamorada de una compañera de clase quien aún no sabe que también le pasan cosas con ella. Inmejorable descripción de la realidad de muchas jóvenes que se encuentran en la misma situación. Con un bajo presupuesto pero una alta cuota de emoción es por lejos la mejor película europea de los últimos tiempos.

• Den handlar som bekant om ensamme Agnes, som inte har några vänner och som är lesbisk och blir retad för det, och så har vi Elin, tjejen som haft många killar, men aldrig legat med någon av dem, och hon vill testa något nytt.
• Det är nästan äckligt vad mycket man känner igen sig i denna Svenska independent film; gjord till stor del bara av amatörer. Moodyssons idé är fullkomligt briljant; gör en film om det vanliga livet, för så här är livet för de flesta tonåringar.
• Äntligen en film som är fucking jävla kuk bra!!!

• Regie: Lukas Moodysson
• Agnes (Rebecka Liljeberg) liebt Elin (Alexandra Dahlström).
• Elin scheint aber auf Jungs zu stehen und so rechnet sich die Schülerin keine Chancen bei ihrer Klassenkameradin aus. Eines Tages auf Agnes’ Geburtstagsparty geschieht aber das Unerwartete.
• Elin erwidert die Gefühle der Außenseiterin, jedoch heißt das nicht, dass von jetzt an alles gut ist. Der Druck der Freundinnen und ihr Image machen es Elin nicht leicht, ihre Zuneigung zu Agnes in der Öffentlichkeit zu zeigen.
• Dadurch kommt es zu einer Reihe von Missverständnissen, welche Agnes immer wieder aus der Bahn werfen.
• Fazit: Ein wunderbarer Film über die erste Liebe.
