• SYNOPSIS Dancer in the Dark par Frédéric Thorens (Amazon.fr) :

• Difficile de décrire ou de retranscrire ce que l'on peut ressentir lorsque résonnent les dernières notes du générique de Dancer in the Dark: un savant mélange d'émotions, une palette de sentiments, une kyrielle confuse d'impressions… de la pitié à la révolte, du respect à la compassion.
• Ovationné, comme jamais un film ne l'avait été lors de sa projection, et récompensé de la Palme d'or au Festival de Cannes 2000, le chef-d'œuvre du réalisateur danois Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves, Les Idiots) mérite amplement tout le bien et les excellentes critiques dont il a fait l'objet sur la croisette et au moment de sa sortie en salle.
• Drame musical haut en couleur aussi brillamment réalisé qu'interprété (Björk magnifique et tellement sincère en "mère courage", accablée par tous les malheurs du monde), Dancer in the Dark n'épargne personne, perce les armures des cœurs les moins sensibles et tarit les glandes lacrymales les plus rebelles à l'épanchement.
• Et c'est là que se situe sa plénitude extrême, sa force.
• En un mot, un film bouleversant, impressionnant, grandiose dont on ne peut certainement pas sortir indemne et qui donne à l'expression "n'avoir que les yeux pour pleurer" sa pleine justification.

» IMDB (US) : The French have done few films about their own Vietnam war. Schoendorffer has done two of them, the 317th Platoon and Dien Bien Phu, the latter about the 1954 battle where the French army was defeated and lost the war. This movie was a sort of answer to Oliver Stone's Platoon and its hand-held cinematography and "realistic" shooting et setting strongly evokes the recent US war movies. However it goes little beyond that (war is dirty, people did their best etc.). It may serves as a useful reminder of this war (it is quite forgotten, even in France) and as a touching tribute to the people who fought this doomed and dubious battle. It's more an interesting attempt than a real success as a movie.

• This beloved 1962 film from the golden age of international cinema can't help but look terribly self-conscious now, full of ambivalent nods to the contemporaneous vitality of the French New Wave (an obligatory iris shot of star Hardy Kruger, for instance, as seen through something like a tiny knothole).
• There is also a fair amount of dragging and wasted motion in the overlong story, but even that is forgivable given this film's extraordinary, soulful portrait of a beautiful if impossible relationship.
• Hardy Kruger plays Pierre, a former military pilot whose plane crashed after a bombing raid in Indochina.
• Killing a little girl in the process, Pierre suffers a psychological trauma that is lessened by the company of a 12-year-old orphan named Cybele (Patricia Gozzi), herself an abandoned, luckless child in need of companionship.
• Meeting every Sunday, the two become immersed in a deeply affectionate world of their own, where nothing unsavory actually occurs yet a full range of emotional colors seems possible--much like two innocents reborn in each other's eyes.
• Cowriter and director Serge Bourguignon adopts a fairy-tale tone for both the central bond between Pierre and Cybele as well as the oddly harsh, uncaring social environment that inevitably condemns their union.
• Bourguignon is lucky to have a couple of important allies: Maurice Jarre for the musical score and legendary cinematographer Henri Decae behind the lens.
• While these artists can't save Bourguignon from his own trite excesses as a visualist, they enhance his considerable feeling for the redemptive poetry of an unlikely love.
