• This beloved 1962 film from the golden age of international cinema can't help but look terribly self-conscious now, full of ambivalent nods to the contemporaneous vitality of the French New Wave (an obligatory iris shot of star Hardy Kruger, for instance, as seen through something like a tiny knothole).
• There is also a fair amount of dragging and wasted motion in the overlong story, but even that is forgivable given this film's extraordinary, soulful portrait of a beautiful if impossible relationship.
•  Hardy Kruger  plays Pierre, a former military pilot whose plane crashed after a bombing raid in Indochina.
• Killing a little girl in the process, Pierre suffers a psychological trauma that is lessened by the company of a 12-year-old orphan named Cybele (Patricia Gozzi), herself an abandoned, luckless child in need of companionship.
• Meeting every Sunday, the two become immersed in a deeply affectionate world of their own, where nothing unsavory actually occurs yet a full range of emotional colors seems possible--much like two innocents reborn in each other's eyes.
• Cowriter and director Serge Bourguignon adopts a fairy-tale tone for both the central bond between Pierre and Cybele as well as the oddly harsh, uncaring social environment that inevitably condemns their union.
• Bourguignon is lucky to have a couple of important allies: Maurice Jarre for the musical score and legendary cinematographer Henri Decae behind the lens.
• While these artists can't save Bourguignon from his own trite excesses as a visualist, they enhance his considerable feeling for the redemptive poetry of an unlikely love.

• S'il fallait personnifier l'élégance française, c'est à Jeanne Moreau, muse de François Truffaut et d'Orson Welles, que devrait revenir cet honneur.
• Elle a créé Le Tourbillon, écrit par Georges Delerue et Bassiak-Rezvani pour "JULES ET JIM" de Truffaut, puis "India Song" pour le film du même nom signé par Marguerite Duras. Mais n'allez pas pour autant la prendre pour une interprète élitiste et littéraire. Cette compilation présente surtout la chanteuse légère et coquine qui n'hésite pas à jouer de son statut de sex-symbol distingué (cf. "Les petits ruisseaux font les grandes rivières (et moi je fais l'amour)").

• In this little Provencal village, a new baker, Aimable, settles down. His wife Aurelie is much younger than him, and beautiful. She departs with a shepherd the night after Aimable produced his first breads. Aimable is so afflicted he can not work anymore. Therefore, the villagers, who initially laughed at his cuckoldry, take the matter very seriously (they want the bread) and organize to find Aurelie and bring her back to the bakery.

• Although it pales in comparison to the French trilogy, Fanny/u> captures the original's bittersweet mix of romance and regret.
• Curiously, it retains the slightly stagy quality of an adapted musical.
• Charles Boyer and Maurice Chevalier revel in their juicy autumnal roles, and --thanks to Logan's fondness for rapturous close-ups-- Leslie Caron never looked more beautiful.
• Harold Rome's Broadway score plays underneath many scenes (without the lyrics, that is), but what gives the movie its lilt is the color photography by the great Jack Cardiff.
• The Marseilles waterfront, where Boyer's café is scenically located, becomes a wonderfully bustling backdrop for the funny/sad story.

MARCEL PAGNOL : REGAIN

• STORY REGAIN :
• In the 30s, a small village in the South of France (Provence) is losing its inhabitants (and so its life) because young people prefer to go to the city to find easy jobs and escape from being farmers living in relative poverty.
• Only a few old people and the poacher Panturle (Gabriel Gabrio) remain.
• Panturle dreams of bringing the village back to life, finding a wife, founding a family and work as a farmer.
• One day, the village is visited by a traveling knife-grinder, Urbain Gedemus (the famous French comedian Fernandel, playing for the first time a mean character) and a young (and beautiful) woman, Arsule (played by the wonderful Orane Demazis).
• Gedemus treats Arsule like a slave, but Arsule accept this because she has nowhere to go and -we guess- her 'work' with Gedemus is the last thing that saves her from being a prostitute.
• When she meets Panturle and knows about his dreams, she escapes from Gedemus and decides to stay with him.
• Together, they start a new life, made of hard farming work but mostly of happiness to have each other - fulfilling the earlier dreams of Panturle.
• Can anything break the happiness of their new life?

• It glorifies modesty in life, the love for the land and honest work.
• As always in the work of Jean Giono (the writer of the novel on which the film is based), the story is a hymn to nature and ordinary people.
• The plot of the movie is reduced to its simplest form.
• It is the story of two people finding their right place on Earth and the right person to spend their life with.
• Marcel Pagnol shows that this simple story is enough to make a good movie.
• Wonderful. Highly recommended 10/10.

• Years ago as a graduate student, I was ecstatic to see a faded, fuzzy, and torn copy of LE MILLION at one of the campus film societies. Nevertheless, I was immediately enchanted. Luckily, those who today want to see this masterpiece have this magnificently restored version by Criterion. No one who loves classic cinema will fail to be enchanted by this magical story about the hunt for a lost, winning lottery ticket.
• In 1931, the year this film was made, European cinema was just beginning to catch up with the technical achievements made in the United States in the late 1920s. The period from 1929 to the early 1930s was an extraordinary time, as the art struggled with perfecting the new ability to record soundtracks. For a brief period of time, the world of cinema was awash with a world of possibilities, and in Hollywood Ernst Lubitsch made perhaps the first lasting musical films in a string of productions (THE LOVE PARADE, MONTE CARLO, and THE SMILING LIEUTENANT by 1931, and later ONE HOUR WITH YOU and THE MERRY WIDOW) that borrowed heavily from the operetta, a form that tragically-based on the extraordinary success achieved by Lubitsch and later Clair and Mamoulian-failed to survive for long.
• LE MILLION was essentially an attempt to do in France what Ernst Lubitsch was doing so successfully in Hollywood. The transition was an easy one, especially given that Lubitsch, the European expatriate, was setting all of his films in Europe. Rene Clair, however, added many touches of his own. The humor he employs in the film is laced with a degree of slapstick that simply wasn't Lubitsch's style. This film is a romp through Paris, and romping wasn't Lubitsch's mode of travel. LE MILLION is working class, while Lubitsch focused primarily on the antics of the aristocracy, or with workers having to deal with the aristocracy. Also, while Clair of necessity worked primarily in the studio (the limitations of sound technology required it), he employs some exterior shots that were very unusual for the time.
• There is a magic and a delight in LE MILLION that simply cannot be captured in words. There is something sui generis about a truly great film, especially one that is great in only the way that a film can be great, in the use of camera to tell a story, to tell a joke, to invoke a sense of delight. RENE CLAIR : QUATORZE JUILLET

• STORY Bastille Day : Perhaps Rene Clair's most perfect film !
• Jean and Anna are young and in love. They spend Bastille Day together trying to dance the night away, trying to get in a kiss or two.
• Things keep getting in the way though, funny things like the rain, the whim of the band that's playing, and the stuffy old woman walking around.
• Unfortunately, when Jean returns home, his ex-girlfriend is waiting for him on his bed. Misunderstandings ensue, and it's not worth ruining by revealing all the wonderful things that happen through the rest of this film.
• I love À nous la liberté and Le million a lot, but neither of them reach the emotional peaks of Quatorze Juillet.
• It's still just as humorous as the other two, perhaps more so, but neither of them moved me like this one.
• It's not a musical, but it is imbued with very beautiful music. It's a magical film, one of the best ever made.
• Annabella, who also starred in Le million, is back as Anna in this one. 10/10.

• BIOGRAPHIE DE RENE CLAIR par l'Académie Française :

• Il est né à Paris, dans le quartier des Halles. Tenté par une carrière littéraire à la veille de la guerre, il publie des poèmes et des articles de critique, et devient acteur pour Feuillade et Protazanov. C'est en 1924 qu'il réalise ses trois premiers films, entre fantastique et dadaïsme, dont Entracte, qui est conçu pour accompagner un ballet de Francis Picabia et Eric Satie, Relâche, au prestigieux Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
• Le jeune René Clair débute donc sous le signe de l'Avant-garde. Il s'oriente ensuite, dans les ultimes années de l'art muet, vers la comédie brillante. Mais ce sont les premières expériences du parlant qui lui apportent la consécration et très vite une gloire universelle. Sceptique en 1927 sur les possibilités d'un cinéma sonore, il réfléchit ensuite à un possible usage du son traité comme un matériau aussi malléable que la lumière ou le comédien. Entre 1930 et 1932, entre Le Million et 14 Juillet, il tourne quatre films au studio d'Epinay, imposant sa vision aérienne, poétisée et convenue du petit peuple de Paris. Fantaisie, rythme tendu et mise en scène inventive presque toujours saisie dans le mouvement caractérisent son écriture, qui se teinte de social quand la crise économique obscurcit l'horizon (A nous la liberté).
• Après l'échec immérité du Dernier milliardaire en 1934, il s'expatrie en Angleterre, puis aux Etats-Unis pendant la guerre. Sa deuxième carrière française commence en 1947 avec Le Silence est d'or, un hommage attendri à l'art muet. Très attendus, ses films d'après-guerre sont moins inventifs, plus mélancoliques et plus académiques aussi que ceux de sa jeunesse. Il est lui-même le premier cinéaste élu à l'Académie française, en 1960.
